We've all heard the health risks related to vaping. Seemingly every week new studies come out, often with contradictory messages. It can therefore be hard to separate the fact from the fiction with regards to vaping. Nicotine-free vaping is no exception. Lacking the addictive properties of nicotine is certainly a benefit compared to regular cigarettes or higher concentration e-cigarettes, but that's not to say it's completely without its own risks.
Quality of Ingredients
While a lack of nicotine in itself is certainly a good thing, other ingredients within your e-juice could potentially pose a risk. The variety of flavours available is one of the reasons vaping has taken off in popularity, with an almost endless range of exciting flavours coming along daily. Yet with such popularity means the market is flooded with products of varying standards, and you may not always know what's going into your e-liquid.
Certain flavourings, while they might be 'food grade', are not necessarily safe to be inhaled, and the adequate research has not been done on a lot of these substances. All in all, it's best to buy from a reputable retailer so you have at least some idea what you're vaping. You should also be wary of overly cheap products, as they may be cheap for a reason!
Withdrawal Symptoms
Nicotine is a powerful addictive drug. As such, if you suddenly stop ingesting it, your body might react negatively, and you will most likely notice the difference when vaping. The throat hit itself will not be as strong, meaning that you might not get the same level of satisfaction out of it. Added to this, you could suffer from withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety, headaches, depression or an increase in appetite.
If you can battle through these withdrawal symptoms and start using a nicotine-free e-cigarette, it should be beneficial. The best way of minimising these symptoms is to gradually lower the nicotine content in your e-cigs, so the transition is not so tough.
What's Your Flavour?
While a lot of people prefer the feeling of nicotine while vaping, for others the absence of nicotine can actually be a benefit. For many people, vaping isn't just about the nicotine hit but simply inhaling and exhaling pure flavours. Nicotine is a big part of the throat hit that many vapers find essential, but for those who value flavour above all, it can hinder rather than enhance the vaping experience. If you're one of these vapers then it certainly makes sense to use a zero nicotine e-liquid.
So, is it Safe?
If you feel the need for a product that will allow you to inhale deeply and breathe out flavour, and the nicotine itself is not the main part of the experience, then zero nicotine vaping is a much preferable solution to smoking. It also means that the nicotine isn't the most important part of your vaping experience, so it should still be pleasurable if you cut it out.
It would be foolish, however, to present it as a risk-free pastime. Taking any foreign substances into your lungs comes with risk, especially if you're buying your e-liquids from less-than-reputable sources. However, if you can vape without nicotine, it's certainly a great alternative, and you might even prefer it if enjoying the flavour is your main concern.
