What is Vaping Juice?

E-liquid, e-juice, vape juice, vaping juice. All names for the same thing, the substance which is heated to create the vapour during vaping. Vaping juice comes in many wacky and wonderful flavours, catering to whatever your taste preferences are. With the relative recentness of vaping as a pastime, many people don't fully know what e-liquid really is, but in fact it's not that complicated!
What is Vaping Juice Made of?
E-liquids contain four main ingredients; propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, nicotine (sometimes) and additional flavourings. The propylene glycol or vegetable glycerin forms the base of the vaping juice. These ingredients are non-toxic organic compounds, considered safe for consumption. They are actually used as food additives, and can be found in a variety of products on the shelves of your local supermarket.
PG vs VG
Propylene glycol (PG) is used as a flavouring carrier in food products and an ingredient in food colourings while vegetable glycerin (VG) is a sweet, thick vegetable-based liquid. PG is noted for providing a 'throat hit', which some people claim is similar to the feeling of smoking tobacco. It also carries flavour more effectively than VG. Some people, though, can find PG irritating to the throat, and allergies have been reported.
VG is considerably thicker than PG, and the hit from a VG fluid is a lot smoother. Studies point towards it being essentially harmless, though it can cause a dry mouth or sore throat. Many e-liquids are a combination of the two substances, so it may take some experimenting to find out which ratio works best for you.
E-juice comes in a range of nicotine levels, and since most vapers are ex (or current) smokers the level of nicotine often corresponds to how heavy your smoking habit is/was. E-liquids range from nicotine-free to 36mg and even higher, with a 'light strength' e-liquid considered 6mg, a 'medium' around 12mg and a 'strong' anything from 18mg upwards. Heavy smokers will probably be best starting with stronger concentrations, and gradually weaning themselves off while lowering the dose.
The Act of Vaping
Vaping differs from smoking in that the juice is heated to create a vapour, which is then inhaled. Nothing is burned through the process of combustion, so no smoke, ash or tar is ever created. The comparatively safe method of heating the liquid is why vaping in public places is acceptable in a way smoking isn't, and poses no risk to those around you.
One of the reasons vaping is so unique and more varied than regular smoking is thanks to the sheer number of flavours available. If you've spent your life wishing to partake of such classic flavours as 'Unicorn Blood', 'Medusa Juice' or 'Gorilla Juice' then worry not, the future is here, and it's golden. If Gorilla juice isn't your thing, flavours such as apple, almond, menthol or tobacco are also available, along with ice cream, cola - even butter, if your love of dairy extends that far.
